英文寫作 mode: description (描述練習)

Melissa

"I am standing in a wild open courtyard.  The weather is quite pleasant.  The breeze blows and my skirt waves slightly.  I look up to the sky and see the clouds pile high over me.  The ray seems to be hided, but the cloud edge gives it away.  Turning the sight back to my left side, about ten paces far, there is a long row of firs standing steadfast.  The scenery looks vague and the firs appear to be veiled.  I try to figure out the end of the row, but it seems that the trees lead the way to the endless end.  Then, I notice that there is a cottage right in front of me.  Beneath the red side ridges, the wall stands erect two floors high.  A veranda with wrought ironed railing is on the left side of the wall.  Some earth must have been washed out by the rain, so the bricks have been exploded in the air.  Suddenly, I sense some movements at the right side.  I make a turn and I am astonished at what I see.

My boyfriend is squatting not far from me.  He is attentive to look toward the certain direction with smiling.  His face is shining with happiness, and he is grinning broadly to his ears.  Although there are a few lines by his eyes and a stupid fly might blunder between them, they do not lessen his charm.  In my mind, the bell starts ringing.  I take a deep breath and follow the line of his vision.  What a relief!  I find his parents across from him.  Nevertheless, it still shocks me a bit because I have never met his family yet.  He looks very excitedly because he keeps making gestures with his arms waving wildly in the air.  My lovely man must have told some funny jokes, for his parents look like being entertained well indeed.  It occurs to me that there was an ancient Chinese story about an old man tempted to amuse his parents with a funny colorful costume and comical dancing.  How come I compare my cute little man with that droll character?

I pull my mind back and wonder whether it would be appropriate if I go up to them now.  It looks as if they do not perceive my visit.  For this reason, I remain but try to catch the words which may be carried by the wind; however, I hear nothing.  As I begin to get anxious, my nose captures a scent, a burning smell.  It smells like boiling soy sauce, sweet and salty; it smells like someone is frying the juicy chop on the steel plate.  I almost can see the gravy flipping on it with steam and hear its sound.  I assume someone is barbequing.  Driving by the hunger, I turn around to look for the source of scent.  The aroma is from a thing which is surrounded by my boyfriend and his family.  I try hard to distinguish what that thing is, but I failed.  There is nothing more than a shadow; there is even no smoke at all.  How strange it is.  I decide to reveal the veil, greet to my boyfriend's family and feed myself.  Just about walking toward them, I see my boyfriend turn his head to me but skip me.  He did not even spend one second on me.  I appear to be transparent.

Soon, I realize that he is looking at the veranda.  This time his smile is different.  It is much tenderer, and it is the kind that I have been dreaming to see in the wedding.  Obviously, he is in love.  I can not help myself following his sight to the veranda.  It is a girl.  She is leaning against the fine railing with a goblet at ease.  The wine is as if a ruby shining between her slender fingers.  The glow is floating on her long straight black silk hair when the wind blows through her hair.  The long thin eyebrows are in the shape of an old moon; her eyes are in the glory of love; the nose is pointed.  She has rosy cheeks, and they make her smile even sweeter.  Indeed, she is a delicate lady.  She is smiling with warmth, and my boyfriend has his passion in return.  They see no one else but each other.  I cannot make a sound and I am stiff," said Melissa, my cousin.

When telling me about her frighten dream, Melissa was going to get married at noon.  Even worst, it was raining cats and dogs outdoors because a typhoon had struck the northern Taiwan the day before.  Melissa buried her head into the hands.  The glow of her hair floated because of her trembling shoulders.  She dared not to cry out loudly, for she wanted to leave her agitation in her room only; however, her sobbing was loud as a thunder echoing in the room.   Finally, Melissa lifted up her head.  Her rosy cheeks had turned pale; her eyes were in tears.  Her thin lips were in red with some blood stain.  The puffy eyes were empty.  She was cornered and deeply helpless.

In modern saying, Melissa was in "Pre-marital Neurosis" at the moment.  Not long before, I had tried making a cup of hot black coffee to calm her down.  Melissa held the cup in her shivering hands and her veins emerged.  I wished that the rising steam could take her concern away and then perished in the air.  Her drooping face told me that my wish did not come true, but at least she stopped crying.  "Kao! Kao!"  Someone knocked on the door lightly.  The door was opened slowly.  The light of outdoors sneaked into her room.  It was Melissa's fiancé, Frank.  Frank did not ask any question; he stepped over to embrace her and listened to her with patient and smile.  He put his mouth to Melissa's ear and then murmured to her.  I stood on my feet and left them in the room.

It was a long exhausted night and I threw myself to my cozy sofa.  Not until I looked through the glasses did I notice the rain had stopped already.  I pushed the window open and the fresh air could not wait fulfilling the house.  The brightness was chasing the darkness away, and the sky was sprinkled with orange powder.  The bird in the cage was twittering and flipping its wings.  More and more bikers and drivers started the engines and ran around in the blocks.  Not far away, several people were busy uploading the fresh vegetables and fruits into the trucks.  More people shouted and bargained in the market.  An old couple in sport suits was passing by; I almost could hear their laughter.  The town was energetic again.  A new day came.  Unexpectedly, someone came to stand by me.  It was Melissa and I pointed that couple to her.  Melissa gave me a smile.  I knew that she was ready to step into the next stage in her life.
