Taiwan on full alert against swine flu
Taiwan went on full alert against swine flu on 28 April.
(From three to four. It means "a significant increase in the risk of a pandemic.)
Because Taiwan is categorized as highly prepared in case of major outbreaks of communicable diseases by the WHO, it is needless to worry.
1. Will you be infected by eating pork?
~~~No! You won't!
The virus is transmitted by people coming in physical contact with people who are infected with swine flu.
2. How is the current situation of swine flu?
a. Reported cases:
No cases have been reported in Taiwan; however, it is likely that the virus would find its way into the country.
b. Strategies:
i. to coordinate the replenishment of medication and vaccine stockpiles
1) surgical mask: with around 50-60 million pieces in stock
2) vaccine: the local manufactures are able to produce 200,000 doses of vaccine a month
Tamiflu (克流感) is the best available medicine against H1N1.
Currently, the nation has enough to treat up to 2.3 million people.
ii. to promote information
1) to earmark(allocte) a special budget
2) to use TV channels
3) to set up command centers in all cities and countries
c. to guard the gate of country severely
1) to board all flights from affected areas and screen passengers for swine flu
2) to take temperature with an ear thermometer (radiation?)
3. What are the processes for suspected cases?
a. to be asked for quarantine at home for a week
b. If the case is confirmed, the patient will be sent to Taipei Municipal Hoping Hospital for
treatment.
Challenge
In July, the World Games is held in Kaohsiung. A swine flu prevention task force will be established in July. The athletes from flu-hit areas would be placed under quarantine when they arrive.
